RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists the provider with patient care in the office, including but not limited to the following tasks:
    • Clinical Chart Preparation in advance of patient’s visit
    • Obtain the Chief Complaint or reason for the visit
    • Obtain Vital Signs
  • Set devices for providers as indicated
    • Performs an ECG and knows the indications for obtaining an ECG (i.e. S/S, >6 months, HR >100 or <50 bpm, drug therapy evaluation (antiarrhythmic medications), pre-op, baseline, etc.
    • Reviews and updates the patient’s current medication list and allergies per protocol, and prepares (pends) prescription refills as needed
    • Updates Past Medical History, Social History and Surgical History
  • Registers ambulatory cardiac monitors as ordered and instructs patients on their use.
  • Works with the EP providers and CMC on critical device notifications and appointments follow up as appropriate per Virginia Heart protocol
  • Provides patient education and documentation
  • Works closely with CMC technicians to ensure device transmissions and alerts are addressed in a timely matter as per Virginia Heart protocols
  • Upon successful completion of the Anticoagulation Therapy Competency Exam, and the discretion of the individual physician and the clinical specialist, the RN performs Anti-coagulation Therapy Management
  • Upon successful completion of the Pharmacology Competency Exam, authorizes prescription refills under the physician's supervision
  • In-basket management, upon completion of training and required examinations, assists with in-basket messages as well as telephone triage
  • Shows adequate competence in entering documentation after communication with providers and patients under the appropriate sections in the EMR
  • Assist with EP procedure coordination as needed
  • Notifies patients of test results per Virginia Heart protocol.  
  • Ensures a safe environment for patients and staff while demonstrating professionalism in all interactions with patients, providers, and colleagues to foster a positive experience
  • Serves as a member of the resuscitation team in emergency situations, including initiating IV access and administering IV medications, while maintaining all required certifications in good standing
  • Routinely checks the emergency cart and equipment per protocol, maintains knowledge of the location of all medical supplies and medications, and ensures proper operation of emergency equipment
  • Reports supply needs to the office manager and ensures equipment is properly maintained and cleaned according to the manufacturer’s recommendations
  • Resolve issues appropriate to the scope of the position
  • Maintains the workstation and all clinical areas in a clean and organized manner
  • Assists with administering flu shots to employees and providers during flu season, and supports the Clinical Specialist in administering and/or reading PPDs for new employees during onboarding
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support clinical operations and ensure smooth office workflow
  • Required to float to other Virginia Heart offices as needed

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful completion of a Registered Nurse program.
  • Current Virginia State Registered Nurse License in good standing or valid Compact State License.
  • Minimum one year of clinical experience, cardiology experience preferred.
  • Ability to interpret 12-lead ECGs preferred.
  • Knowledge of cardiac medications (classifications, side effects, etc.) preferred.
  • Current BLS required; ACLS preferred.
  • Computer literate and prior experience with an Electronic Medical Record (EMR), EPIC preferred.
  • Strong patient education and communication skills

Training Requirements:

  • The EP RN orientation period is eight weeks.
  • Orientation is a progressive process; the Clinical Specialist may defer administration of the ECG exam until later in orientation based on the RN’s level of expertise Anticoagulation therapy management training is provided in the latter part of orientation. The RN is expected to attend training sessions for new Virginia Heart processes as they are implemented.
  • The RN must successfully pass the pharmacology exam to be authorized to process prescription refills and must also pass the anticoagulation therapy exam prior to independently managing anticoagulation.
